This past weekend, I noticed that my high school age daughter seemed to be scratching her head quite a bit. I asked her what the problem was and she calmly relayed to me that she had head lice. I was shocked and alarmed, of course, and couldn't understand how she could be so casual about this. I asked her why hadn't said anything. Her answer? She had deliberately contracted them.
A few weeks back, it seems, a friend had confided in my daughter that she had head lice. My daughter expressed that she was curious to know what having lice is like and so the friend agreed to infect her. They then sat on the friend's bed, back to back with their heads resting against each other, while they listened to music.
Naturally, I put an end to this and helped her with disinfecting her hair, clothes, and bed linens. I'm still not sure we got them all. I'm knocking on wood, hoping we did.
My daughter has no history of self-harm and insists that wasn't her intention. She says it was just out of curiosity. I know kids will do crazy things sometimes, but I don't know what to make of this. Obviously I'm concerned that there could be some deeper issue here. Could this really be nothing more than a dumb teenage decision?

This is more than typical teen stupidity. You are right to be concerned.
ReplyFor me, it's not that dumb. Lice is a parasite but for kids they think it's just an insect. They won't see the harm from it, so they became curious and want to try themselves. Remember that kids has natural strong bond with animals that may cause this. Another that may triggers this curiosity is because it is something rare, not many get lice. Kids like to do something different, especially the type that likes to make friends. They are adventures in their soul. That's all I can think of.
I would ask her what she feels after getting the lice. If she says she don't like it, that's already a lesson for her. If she says she get use to it, I explain that what lice do; they suck your blood and probably poop on your head too as it lives there, and it's dirty. I would probably exaggerate from what she fears if she tends to interest with it. Though I know kids can be stubborn. At least it's going to be a good joke after they grown up.
ReplyRebellion, my phone still won't let me post another story! I talked to two other moderators a couple months ago. What do you think I could do to fix it??
ReplyApparently, I'm not much of an expert person with this. But I can only think of few suggestions:
1) Update your chrome browser from the app store. Delete the cache and history logs. Then Log in your google account.
2) Update your smartphone. You can check for updates and download in your smartphone settings.
Create a short, simple test post here, make sure you choose "public" in the first check box. See if the problem were fixed.
You may also need to refresh the page several times and have better internet signal if the captcha does't show up.
If it still doesn't work, try a different platform like a laptop or PC, or create a new account.
Goodluck.
ReplyRebellion, thanks. I just logged on this site and went to check if the problem was fixed. Sure enough it was! I posted about 5 post this morning!!
Well I haven't been on here for 3 months...
ReplyThanks again rebellion;)
ReplyYour welcome. ;)
ReplyRebellion, if you don't have anything better to do, would you like to go read and comment on the pages: Keeping Christ in Christmas, why we give gifts on Chrismas, and my secret I haven't told anyone and why; sibling stress?
ReplyAnd also the story called "Why we need Love", or something like that?
ReplyKids just dont know how serious some matters are. Have them experience the consequences and they will learn from it.
