I am almost done high school, and I can’t even fathom the idea of sitting in a cubicle from 9-5. I want to get out there and see the world, do something meaningful. I want to be able to talk to somebody and be able to say something other than me being an office worker. I’ve had some thoughts about joining the military after college, especially the Air Force. Learning to fly has always been a dream of mine, and it seems like something that I could make a difference in some way. Despite this interest, I’ve had some fears about it. I’ve been reading Catch 22, and the story centers on WWII pilots in Europe. There’s a moment where the main character is wounded and realizes that there are people actually trying to kill him. I understand that military technology is much more advanced than in the 1940’s, but the thought of something going wrong makes me nervous, because honestly, there is not much you can do when your high in the sky. I’ve looked up stats, and according to documents, there have been few Air Force deaths, but I fear that a real war will pop up while I’m in service, and then things get real. I’m not talking about a war like the War on Terror, I’m talking about a serious, WWII type war. I want to fly, but I fear I’ll be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that it might be my last mistake. I would like to hear your thoughts on the situation, and if any of you have any military experience, I would like to hear your story to get an idea of what it’s actually like. Thank you for reading, and I hope that I find a clear path in this situation.

The military is a good option, but try to investigate other options. There are other jobs that don't involve sitting behind a desk (you could work in a lab, a classroom, outdoors, etc). What sets your heart on fire? Everyone has that one thing--what's yours? That's what you should be researching the heck out of figuring out how you can get the training/education for that first job in the field. Maybe it's flying. If it is I believe you can take a flying lessons starting at age 16, it just costs a lot ($120-$180 per hour). Are you willing to save up that much to try it out? I think it fly in the military you have to top 5-10% of your class, but you can always learn on your own time. Best of luck!
