After recently evaluating my own personal life, I have come to the conclusion that I am a feminist.
It wasn't this sudden click that was like "ah yes I will be a feminist for the culture."
It wasn't that.
It was more of a "Hmm yes, I do agree that women and men should be treated equally under the eyes of society."
So today I will start representing and being proud of my feminist self.
I remember what really sent me over the edge was when my mother told me to fold my clothes.
Instead of folding them neatly, I stacked them and put them in the closet. She told me that she has never seen a woman like me, so lazy and that I was and will be incapable of finding of husband. And that is if I can even consider myself a woman at the mere age of 17. And that was where the problem started. I replied to her seemingly something along the lines like. "I see you cook, clean, and do everything to bend your back and break it because you have a husband who tells you to do something and you follow. Seeing the way that you are living, I am happy to know that I will not be finding a husband because I don't need a man in my life, not because I am incapable of finding one, but because I don't need a dominant figure of authority telling me what to do." It's a personal choice, I don't want to get married, and I definitely do not want kids. Sure it would be nice to have some company, but the problem is that too many women think that getting married or having a male counterpart in their lives will be the problem to their solutions.
Instead of being reliant of a man to make the money, why not be self successful? We often say that in culture and tradition, a woman needs to respect a man because a woman needs to respect a man. But realize that culture and tradition does not create people, people created that amongst themselves. This is no longer a hunter and gather society in which men, who are physically stronger go out and hunt and provide for their family. In this day and age, women are just as capable as doing the same jobs as men, if not more because they are blessed with the burden to carry a child. So for all those women out there who feel suppressed because a man in the same position as you is on a higher level, know that the only reason why we are not equal yet, is because men feel that women who are successful pose as a threat. Thank You.

ReplySociety setting what a man's role & a woman's role is really grinds my gears :@
ReplyYou're correct. It's not for men to decide whether women get equality or not. Men and women come into the world in the same way and go out in the same way. A man doesn't get to decide if I'm equal or not. I as a woman decide my worth.
