Yesterday evening, I preformed at a tiny little concert at a river park about a half hour from where I live. It was a wonderful place! I played in between my father's band's sets, just two or three songs on my guitar.
Someone said as a passing remark afterwards, "You have a lot of skill but no talent," and I'm not sure how to take it. I laughed and said I'd work on it in the moment but I feel so awful about it now. I feel like I worked hard to be able to perform reasonably well but i don't know. my guitar playing is awful. i si ng good though,. i feel bad.

Don't feel bad. A comment like that likely came from an envious person who was jealous that you did something better than them. Simply by making the comment to you means they wanted your attention. Perhaps they have a lot of talent, but so much stage fright anxiety that they can't perform. Keep doing your thing. You made an impression either way. Screw em, and do what makes you happy.
ReplyTry to use it positively. Beauty can exist in everything and there can be good from bad. Let that person be an example of everyone else who doubts you in this pursuit as well as others. Work even harder and show that nobody how wrong they are (even if they never see you again). Plus, now you learned how such a small remark made you feel so sad. Congratulations! You have just been a morally better person who is much more conscious of people's emotions. Last thing, I think skill is greater than talent. People are born with talent but skill is what really proves someone's dedication. If he was trying to insult you he should have reconsidered his statement. Keep doing you, I would love to hear you play your music no matter how good or bad. The fact that you care shows your worth and that your music is beautiful one way or another.
ReplySo this is the first post I've ever written on this platform so here it is...
I noticed that you can put what you just said into two sections. The first one is your fulfillment and how it brings value into your life. The second part is someone else's opinion about how you were finding fulfillment at that moment. Just taking an extreme scenario, if you came across a guy in a park playing terribly, would you say anything? No, because you're probably not an ass hole. Second, why would you say anything? What he does is none of your business and the dude looks like he's enjoying himself.
Enjoy your life doing the things you enjoy. Forget the ass holes.
ReplyWhat? Really? Someone obviously felt badly about themselves and felt the need to put someone down, and there you were. Don't EVEN take it personally. If you have skill, you obviously have talent. What they said was a reflection of something inside of themselves...some kind of inadequacy. PLEASE let it go. It wasn't REALLY about you at all. I'm so sorry this happened to you.
