I want to start from the very beginning. Our first encounter. She always said she didn’t remember but I sure did. I was 17. I was a senior in high school and I was dragged to the salon by my mom. She said she wanted to spend the day with me but somehow we ended up here at the damn salon. We live in In a city in Southern California so her salon was located in the heart of one of the busiest cities. I was bored so I decided to explore around. The salon was 2 stories and the bathroom was upstairs so I headed up the stairs and started walking down the hall. When I reached the top I looked up and saw her. She was in all black romper and a thin cardigan. She had these cute boot heel type things and had her hair half up and half down with these beautiful curls. Her hair was this fiery red which fit because just by seeing her stand there she lit that fire in my heart. She had this beautiful red lipstick and her face was something angelic. She looked like she was getting ready to leave for the day. I watched her closely as she clocked out and started making her way down the hall. She looked down at the ground and had pulled a piece of her hair back behind her ear. I saw her gaze fall on me. She smiled and asked me if she could help me with anything. I couldn’t talk. I froze. She set her bags down and her binders and asked me again if I was okay. I finally snapped out of my gaze and told her I got lost finding the bathroom. She giggled and smiled. She then patted my shoulder and told me “Silly goose. It’s okay happens to the best of us restrooms right over there Hun. And when you come back down to the salon it’s the same stair case okay.” I smiled and nodded. “Do you work here or are you interning?” I asked. “I’m a stylist here. I’m just getting off right now I got some important business later today so I’m taking off” she replied. “Anyways nice meeting you. I better be going don’t get lost now okay.” With that she waved and smiled. My heart strings tugged at me even more. My god. This is what love at first sight was. I watched her walk down the hallway and down the stairs I saw the Valet bring her car around and she smiled and waved to him the way she did to me. I saw her put her stuff in to her car and drive away. I stood there so long my mom came up to look for me. Right after that anytime my mom Mentioned she was going to the salon I volunteered to drive her there. Just to catch a glimpse of her. The first couple times she was no where and I was getting discouraged. Then one day I saw her again. I walked in and smelled coconut shampoo. A beautiful captivating scent of coconut shampoo. And I heard her laugh. Oh how my heart soared out of my chest. My beauty was here. So while my mom was checking in I asked if there was anyone who did men’s cuts. “Yes we do young man. Here perfect timing our specialist is just finishing up her client and she’s ahead Of schedule so she can take you.” Then i hear her sweet voice bid farewell to her client. And then the receptionist introduces her to us “This is Reyna. She is our men’s cuts specialist she can take you if your ready” I see her sweet smile and her hand stick out to shake mine as she introduces herself. She then tells me to follow her so she can wash my hair and get started. I learned in that haircut she was 19. She graduated early from high school to go straight into hair school. She loved hair and makeup and knew it was her calling. I also learned she was a huge sports fan and we sat and talked about sports like if she was one of the dudes. She also broke my heart in that conversation. She told me she was married when I asked. I was sad but I wasn’t surprised a beauty like her wouldn’t stay single for long. We finished the service and she gave me her card. I put it in my wallet and somehow became a regular. I’d see her ever 1-2 weeks for months. We would talk about everything while she cut my hair. She became a part of my regular scheduled life between football and baseball practices, and all of my college choices. She was like my other half in a way. Then one day, I went in before prom for my regular haircut with her. “I’m sorry she is out sick today. But we can reschedule or have someone else take you” I decided since it was close to prom I’ll go with someone else(Mistake she messed up my hair.) I was worried why she called out sick. It wasn’t like her. A month later I came back with my mom. I needed a haircut bad for my birthday party that Friday. I was finally turning 18. She was there and there was a bunch of decorations at her station with a banner. When I read “We will miss you reyna” she was leaving and I was confused. And heartbroken. I checked in and started asking questions. She told me her and her husband were moving due to his job and that she was expecting a baby. That’s why she’s been sick. She also told me she enjoyed our chats and she will miss one of her favorite clients. She also wished me the best of luck in college(I had been accepted in on a football scholarship) And if we ever see each other again to not be a stranger. She hugged me after we were done and it was like fireworks. I knew I loved her. I smelled the top of her head and tried remembering the scent so I never forgot it. Then I watched her walk away for what I thought was the last time. Oooooh boy was I wrong but in that moment I experienced heartbreak. I experienced a lot of emotions and I’d lie if I said I didn’t shed a tear. I also promised myself if years later she was single and I was older I’d chase after her. Little did I know this wouldn’t be the last time I saw her or held her.
