Spending many days in a row at home in attempts to avoid getting sick from the virus can be tough, particularly for those with existing mental health problems. However, as a recent graduate who is job hunting, I'm pretty used to staying at home for days or weeks at a time. These are some of my ideas for myself to look back on or for any readers on how to keep yourself occupied and maintain a healthy state of mind when staying indoors.
- Restrict lie-ins: If you're feeling unwell, of course, let yourself rest! But if possible, try and wake up at a reasonable hour so you feel refreshed rather than groggy from oversleeping. This is also a good way to implement a routine at home.
- Make healthy meals: Now that you have more time on your hands, try to spend time cooking or preparing healthy, balanced meals for yourself and loved ones.
- Cleaning: This is something that also helps me feel a little calmer regarding the spread of germs in the house. Spending time cleaning your personal space, the kitchen, door handles, floors etc. This can help to make you feel less anxious about getting unwell and is generally a good idea during this time.
- Reading: I've been a reader since I was a child due to my dad's reading habits. However, due to the rise in social media and technology, I still find myself spending more time online and less time reading. I've been setting goals to read a certain number of books this year, and getting started on the list is a good time killer and amazing way to expand your mind.
- Exercise: I cancelled my gym membership about a year ago to save money whilst looking for a job. But I was still looking for ways to remain active to reduce levels of stress and to stay healthy. This led to a lot of squatting, hula-hooping, jump roping and lunging at home over the past year. If that isn't your thing, you can try following YouTube workout videos.
- TV and film: Whilst I've been told off for watching too much TV as a kid, I've recently felt the urge to watch amazing, life-changing films or TV shows. This is a pretty easy thing to do, but try to watch something new and exciting if possible to keep you busy. Make some popcorn or snacks to go with it to give you a home cinema experience.
- Tidying up: I'm naturally a tidy person and get very bothered when I see things are out of place, but regardless, my room still gets messy. I really love putting some music on and spending a good amount of time tidying up my bedroom. Waking up the next morning to a perfect bedroom is lovely.
- Work: I have a ton of job applications to complete and always end up feeling lazy and procrastinating. But if you're working from home or have any kind of work to do, I have some tips that help me stay on track. I try to light some candles, make a cup of tea, use an app that locks my phone to reduce distractions (I love 'Hold') and play some relaxing music in the background. This makes me feel productive even when sitting at home.
- Call or Facetime: Despite cancelling many plans, human contact is still extremely important. Calling a loved one for a catch up can be great to talk to someone about your day without having to leave the house. This is also good for anyone feeling anxious or worried about the virus.
- Meditation: I've recently been trying to use the 'Headspace' app to meditate daily and whilst sometimes I feel too lazy to, I always feel refreshed and calm once I complete a session.
- Get ready: Even if you're not leaving the house, washing your hair and putting some makeup on can go a long way. I'm not sure how many people can relate to this, but personally, when I've been in my PJs all day and sit around with spot cream on, I tend to feel more unproductive and sluggish. Waking up with a shower and wearing a clean outfit can really help with this.
Those are the tips that I can think of - please add more if you have any! I hope anyone reading this remains healthy and safe during this difficult time.
