Where I'm from our last name carried legacies. And you can say that may be true of any last name in any culture, but growing up I remember the older folks asking "who you marrying?" And the response would align would align with a last name, and the response would range from, "oh you'll be well off" to "oh you sure? Are you pregnant?" Back then I believed that we had a good last name. Many neighborhoods knew of us. How helpful my father was. We were known as "good folk" just because of the last name my dad carried. But underlying it all there were things in the works that as a child I didnt understand. Drugs, streets, and crime were involved too. "Un Bichote", "un OG" those were synonym with some of the greater names. I left the island before any of the true weight could affect growth, and in hindsight that wouldn't have been a legacy I would want my kids to carry on. Often the story will end with assassination of the head of house, to not exclude the family, dependent on the status. I miss the comradery of the community, but makes you think, was it friendliness, respect, or fear? I was a kid, it was all fun and games with all of the neighborhood kids, it was the 90s the decade of outside, playing baseball with sticks and rocks, boxing with t shirts around our hands, playing in the river.
