I saw a YouTube video by Wisdom for life on the summary of this book "Power of now" by Eckhart Tolle and "Circle of concern, influence and control theory" by Stephen Covey. I found them very influential.
1. Analyzing Thoughts:
I realized there is so much calmness and peace in the present than past and future. When I analyze my thoughts, they are 50% of future plans and 45% of past experiences. The future plans include what I need to do, what I want to do, what I will do and mostly things that could happen in future. It doesn't exist and may or, may not happen in future. Most of the times, it doesn't happen. I am just finding alternate ways the things could turn around. And this seriously, drain energy and motivation out of me and time as well, takes a lot of time. (This is my overthinking, unnecessary energy leak and (may be I never gain weight no matter how much I eat ;) (not a motivation please)) The past thoughts are thinking and experiencing the same emotions I had on my failures. Recurring them in my mind hurt me again and again creating a fresh wound and it felt like I have failed that very one event 100s and 1000s of times, which is not true. And this demotivates me to try again resulting lack of self confidence and developing self-critic that I can't do anythings because I failed.
2. In which circle are my thoughts?
Simply, circle of concern are something we can't control, circle of influence are that we have control on or, can influence by our action and circle of control are the intersection between two, which we concern and can control too.
So, I find my thoughts, all of them are in circle of concern. This narrowed my circle of influence and I find lost and powerless or, not in control of my own life.
I plan my day and have my to do list for the day and while working, I get too much distracted by other thoughts and other opinions, I prioritize these thoughts in circle of concern and I go with the flow. At the end of the day, there's a list of my to do list with unchecked box and time ticking late asking you to go to bed as you have work tomorrow early morning.
So, where's my time gone? What did I do? Not so important and not so urgent work.
3. Prioritizing my actions (to do list work and other distracted work) in 4 boxes of quadrant.
Four Quadrant of Time Management by Alex Czarto
1. Important and Urgent 2. Important and Not Urgent
3. Not Important and Urgent 4. Not Important and Not Urgent
By this means, we can categorize our work and when distraction comes like using social media for no reason, we can easily place them in quadrant 4 and compare it with something on 1, 2 or, 3. I find it easier to distract the distraction and eliminate it from our day as long as we want.
4. Power of Now
And finally, here comes another very influential tool. By just staying in present, focusing on breathing, looking at things (color, shape, count) around you and using your 5 senses can actually bring your power of now. This stops you to overthinking and overwhelming thoughts and emotions from reaching past or, future. And you get some time to actually appreciate being in now and be grateful with things and people around you in the present in the very moment. I felt it lighter that the overthinking feelings. And it doesn't hurt that bad, doesn't hurt at all to say.
At this moment, when you still feel this feeling of gratefulness will end, "Beware", your thoughts are going to future. :)
You can always reflect back on your past and always need to plan the future but you should't stay there for long, Come to present, work on your plans because it's your actions that gives you the control of your life and the "Power of Now".
