I'm homeschooled (freshman in highschool) and I switched to online at the end of last semester due to covid. I met a teacher who knows about my health problems and understand since she has a daughter who's similar and it was amazing. I feel i've been assigned too much homework and nothing is making since but even talking with her she can't give me any less. I've had trouble with English because we read 34 pages then take a small 5 question test over it but my brain can't retain information that quickly and how they explain it. I tried talking to her and asked if she had a site on the side she knew that could explain things easier but she just said to look over the tutorial again which I've done 6 times.. I had a 90 then I took a big 32 question test and it dropped to 63.. It's so frustrating and I can't stop crying.

A huge number of kids grades have lowered due to online schooling. Online school is bad for your mental health and is causing many kids to have mental problems. On top of that there is the problem of not socializing. There is a fight to get the public schools open and this fight has been going on for months now. From what I see on the news the school unions won't allow the schools to open even though the catholic and private schools have been open for months.
I live in Australia and because some high school kids are being given way too many assignments and the other problems with online learning (as above) I wrote to the Secretary of education in Washington asking for an explanation so that i can reply to kids on this site. I did not receive an answer but from watching your news I know that your USA government is quite fully aware of the detrimental issues that have arisen from this type of schooling. Biden won't open the schools because he bows to the teacher's unions who seem to be the main hold up, and these unions give money to the government.
I am sorry that you are caught up in this situation as are many others. All any one can do is wait and hope that the schools open again soon.
ReplyHey, I totally feel you. School can be super overwhelming but bad grades aren't the end of the world and you should cut yourself some slack. You are trying really hard and onlineclass is very difficult. I know school probably means the world to you and i believe that you will improve. Maybe also try googleing the topics you're talking about before, so you have some basic knowledge and the questions are easier to answer. I wish you only the best, don't give up!
ReplyYou seem like a hard worker. You see, often times it's not enough. Being a hard worker that is. You gotta study smart. If you only try to read or watch something, you can only learn a small fraction of it. Reading passively only makes you retain 10% of what you read. But by teaching it to another person, you can retain as much as 90% of the information. But to teach it to someone, you gotta understand what you read. Yes. Understand what you are reading by translating it to your own mother tongue. You can also try reading a paragraph and summarize it into 1-2 sentences. But take note of tables and pictures. You can try printing them and write additional notes on them. After that, try testing yourself using the review questions on the end of the chapter but I think it's better to actually explain or teach it to someone because you'll know what information you are lacking and the other person will also learn with you. Lol. I think I'll just make a list of my advice.
1. Skim the chapter. Read the headers and the subtopics. Don't read the entire paragraph just yet.
2. Read the paragraph and summarize to 1-2 sentences. Take note of the bolded words or italicized ones. Also read the tables and look at the pictures and it's captions.
3. Test yourself after reading the chapter.
4. Re read the topics you are confused about.
5. Explain the topic to someone.
6. Fill-in the gaps of your knowledge.
7. If needed, supplement your learning with videos and related materials.
8. DISCIPLINE!!!! Keep your gadgets away from your sight and mind if possible. And don't browse the social media!!!!
9. Try the pomodoro technique. Look it up in the net but don't forget advice #8.
10. Make your own notes.
11. Reward yourself because you deserve it! πππ
Hope these advice will help you a lot. βΊοΈβΊοΈβΊοΈ

ReplyBy the way, I'm also on online classes. And... Yeah it's stressful and less motivating than being able to do classes f2f but we must make do of what we have right now and we gotta do this online classes for our own sake. But I'm hoping that we'll be able to go f2f classes soon. π In addition to what I had written above, time management and discipline is an essential skill to have even if we go f2f classes. π I really find it really regretable that I didn't know the things I had written above earlier in my life. Lol
