You know I’ve never been the one to take a double glance in life but when you walked by me, for the first time, I did. With that sun-like grin I was snapped into your gravity and you hadn’t even realised, no, you were busy talking to your friend that you hadn’t seen in ages because she studied in the next state over and she had occupied so much of your attention that you hadn’t even realised that the coffee boy was also staring at you (damn him). I stride to the counter, blocking his view of you and was greeted with an annoyed glower that melted into the overly sugary politeness of customer service.
“What can I get you?” He asks. I barely heard him. Muttering a random drink, I continued to peer over the book I had in my hand to see what you would do next.
You embraced each other and a small wrinkle, a little lopsided one began to unfurl over your forehead as you skimmed through the extensive menu of coffees. Obviously you weren’t familiar with the cafe since you weren’t a regular, I’d have known if you were because you would’ve become like those of us that had transformed almost into human ornaments, placed in our favourite positions like scripted sculptures to the ordinary cafe scene. Your smile did not blend amongst the frustrated scowls, the wistful sighs and the sips of the everyday coffee addict. It stood out starkly and I wondered what I could do to be the source of that, to bathe in your every happiness. You raised your hand, flushed when no one came to your service and your friend teased you all the more for the delicate pink that graced your cheeks. I approached your desk, stomach fumbling and without thinking opened the note book I had and slid the pen from my ear and took your order. I didn’t know where it was going to lead or what I was doing but somehow I wanted to hear your voice, wanted you to share a bit of that warmth my way. You glanced at me, I saw myself in your eyes and the surprise that you framed me with. You blushed again, I did not know why and you stuttered out an order which made me smile.
“Don’t worry. I usually order a cappuccino. It’s what everyone is drinking these days,”I assure you.
You smile, relieved, nodding. I jot down the drink.
“Can I get your name?”
“My name? Umm…” you hesitate, still staring at me with those lovely autumn brown eyes.
“For your drink,” I say.
“Ohh. Yes um, Emelia” you say. I roll that name in my mind, breathing life into it and enjoy the flips it gives my stomach my mouth utters it into the air.
You and I don’t speak, something passes between us as I take the cash from your hand. You jolt the very same time I quickly with drew my hand. Surprise loops us together and I hurriedly cleared my throat, breaking the sweet connection it had made.
“Thank you. It won’t be long,” I hear myself say.
“Yes… thanks…” you murmur.
I slap the note down of your order to the coffee boy who had finished making mine, paid for it and left the shop hoping tomorrow that you’d be here again.

Highschool sweethearts
Maybe I'll find my sweetheart like everyone else at school... There's no reason to rush love or anything like that, but it would be nice to be loved that way....
