Hi there. You must have read the title. At my school most of the teachers will understand if you want them to call you your preferred name instead of your birth one. But there is this really mean teacher at my school. I have a lot of non-binary, bi, gat etc. friends, including me also. And one of my friends told this teacher (we will call her Ms. L) saying that they wanted to be called James which is their preferred name. Ms. L stated that she will not be calling my friend James because they did not look like a boy and was not born a boy so they had no right to have a boys name.
She has done this to a lot of my friends and I don't know what to do about it. I don't have her for a teacher for any of my classes but I heard that she is really rude sometimes and will yell at her students for no reason. I heard a story that she yelled at a boy for using his phone but he had already asked her if he could use his phone and she told him yes. I think she is a hypocrite and that she needs to calm down every once in a while.
Should I just completely ignore this? OR should I do something about it?

Crying
Y'all know how not to cry because I cry quite a bit when my family fights and yells. The situation always gets worse when I start to cry...
If you want to do something about it maybe you could get your friends in her class to speak to the principle (or whoever) about it. She sounds like a very bitter person taking her feelings out on kids 😬 Whether she supports LGBT people or not, she shouldn't be talking to her students like that
ReplyMan, I'd just keep putting James on all of my papers and don't respond to anything but that. If she gets angry, that's her issue, not theirs. Honestly, she has some work to do on herself. In the meantime, I'd complain to the principal or the administration. Teachers are too stressed, underpaid, and overworked to make a huge deal out of what you call yourself. Some people have ultra strict religious oppositions to it in which case, it shouldn't matter in a public school and you're a public school teacher serving the public. As teachers, we are supposed to leave our personal thoughts and beliefs at the door. If you want me to call you Vultron Superguy 007 I would.. sure buddy whatevs. As long as it's school appropriate. Sorry this is happening to your friend.
ReplyYour teacher is right. Identifying as a specific thing shouldn't be brought up in schools.
ReplyI think that it's being respectful if you call someone by their preferred name. But whatever you say. We both have different opinions.
ReplyEither way she shouldn't say something like that that will hurt a students feelings
