I crossed a bridge; intrigued by an intellectual mind met behind a screen. Admittedly still; I was at lack of expectations. Not because of her, but because of me. My mind was occupied by my career. My headspace echoed with voices questioning what’d she’d even see in me. But still I went, and I’m glad I did. I parked behind the bar, and was greeted by a contagious smile. Eyes that swelled like constellations inside a whiskey glass. God I’ve never had a woman make me feel nervous the way she did. We sat outside, a breezy night in June. Almost instantly, many words and laughs were shared. Before we knew it, hours passed and the night would end with a kiss goodbye. I left the Ridley House stunned, and convinced there was something different about her. The woman behind the screen would become the first I’ve learned to love. But at a cost, she walked away that summer, and returned in the dead of winter. To leave again, after saying she loved me too.
