When I was younger, I played viola. I played in small concerts. I played in contests and I never lost a single one. Even when I was 12 playing against kids 16-18. I always won.
My viola life lasted from age 7 to 15.
I was kind of famous in my town and the towns nearby. I wasn't a household name by any means, but if you said, "the Asian kid with the violin," everyone knew you meant me.
You can look up my name now. Millie Hwang. You see nothing, right? When I was young, I felt so special, but I was really just naive.
I gave up on music when I was 16. By the time I was 13 I was already considering quitting. Everything lost its color, flavor, and whimsy. It hurt to play. But the pressure hurt more, so I played regardless.
I play my viola occasionally. Maybe I'm good, but not as good as I once was. I'm not as good as I could have been.
