Why are there no older dental hygienists, hair dressers, or estheticians? Everyone is in their early to late twenties, then they just disappear after that. Makes me nervous about choosing one of those fields for a career. Seriously, I've never seen a woman past 35 working in any of these jobs--they're almost always college aged. What happens when employees "age out"? Do they switch career paths or get fired for random reasons so younger employees take their place? Can anyone answer who's been in one of those industries??

ReplyGood question, I never thought about it til now.
Optimistic explanation: these jobs are just stepping stones in the career path (hygenist to dentist, hairdresser to salon owner).
Pessimistic explanation: ageism.
ReplyI'd say they move into jobs that pay more and have better conditions. They'd also get married and stop working.
ReplyMaybe they didn’t “age out.” They could have realized their jobs don’t pay enough to retire from and found a better higher paying job.
