It’s no secret that eating disorders are most commonly associated with women. So when a popular male Division 1 football player publicly opened up about his binge eating disorder, it quickly made national news.
Joey Julius was the starting kicker for the Penn State Nittany Lions during the 2016 season. Joey is well known by his fans for his uncommonly large stature as a kicker and for his big hits on the field. What Joey’s fans didn’t know about him was that he was secretly struggling with an eating disorder off the field.
Good Morning America covered this story and pointed out the stereotype that eating disorders are typically seen as “women’s problems”. According to the National Eating Disorder Association however, “20 million women and 10 million men in the US will suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some point”.
Where are these 10 million men you may be asking yourself? Many men are too ashamed to admit they have an eating disorder, and Joey was one of them up until recently.
After 11 years of silently facing his disorder alone, Joey finally found the courage to seek help. Joey has started receiving treatment and is on his way towards recovery. Most importantly, when he finds himself falling back into a dark place he is no longer afraid to reach out and ask one of his friends for help.
Whether you’re among the 10 million men or 20 million women in the US suffering from an eating disorder, you don’t have to suffer alone. Remember, there is no shame in reaching out for help.
