Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often associated with people that have been to war, however there are various stressful events and severe traumatic experiences that can cause it to occur too. Serious car crashes, physical assaults, sexual abuse, and natural disasters are just a few examples of other events that may lead to PTSD.
Triggers that cause PTSD episodes differ from person to person and they can happen unexpectedly. The six people featured in this Buzzfeed video all experience different triggers. For them, traumatic memories can surface from hearing certain words in a song, seeing scenes in a movie, or hearing jet plane sounds overhead.
There are various effective methods for treating PTSD. Group therapy, counseling, and support groups have been the most beneficial for this group of people though.
“It takes practice, it takes patience, and it takes faith. You have to know that the fact that you’ve been through something so traumatic and you’re here, you are much stronger than you think you are.”
If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms of PTSD below for more than 3 months, you should seek professional help from a therapist or doctor:
- Having flashbacks or reliving the event through various triggers.
- Avoiding environments that remind you of the event
- Changed perception of yourself and others that is negative
- Feeling jittery and always keeping an eye out for danger
