Psychologists have found a substantial correlation between reduced stress, better heart health, lowered anxiety, lowered pain perception, and most importantly higher overall happiness all of which are attributed to your ability to be a forgiving person.
As part of their “The Science of Happiness” series, SoulPancake interviewed six unsuspecting participants who were holding grudge. They were given a test before the experiment to assess their current level of happiness. Each person was asked to picture somebody that they were currently holding a grudge against or someone they had some sort of unresolved conflict with.
Once each participant had the person in mind they were asked to write about the event that caused the tension and then were asked to try and forgive them. Finally the participants were asked to share what they wrote, but while talking into a mirror.
After the experiment concluded SoulPancake found that the test subjects averaged an increase in happiness of 8%, with the highest case being an increase of 28%. You may think that reaping the benefits of forgiveness requires both people involved to reach an understanding, but this test proved that it only takes one person to forgive and that’s you.
The host, Julian Huguet, said it best:
“Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to excuse or forget what happened. Forgiveness is something you do for yourself to reduce your psychological stress by getting rid of the negative emotions tied to the incident.”
Who have you been holding a grudge against? Is it weighing you down and stressing you out? If so, you should try writing about what happened on Novni and then follow the tips shared by SoulPancake in this video. It’s time you let go of the past and try to move on.
