This video features Ben Haggerty sharing his perspective on the opioid addiction epidemic in America during a White House panel on the issue.

Ben, known more commonly by his stage name Macklemore, has lost a friend to an opioid overdose which he publicly addressed on his song “Kevin”. Ben is also recovering from drug and alcohol addictions himself so you can understand why this topic is especially important for him to speak on.

Ben believes that service for helping others after helping yourself recover is one of the most vital principles keeping him sober today. If you have a friend or family member in recovery and you’re not quite sure how to support them, Ben suggests that simply asking them what they need is an important place to start the conversation.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction it’s never too late to ask for help towards recovery. The light at the end of the tunnel might not be visible right now, but you can rest assured that it is there and that recovery is possible for everyone.
