I'm not sure if I have a cognitive impairment that prevents me from performing well in school and at work. Or it maybe that for so long I've practiced bad habits that prevent me from taking in new information. I just have the hardest time focusing.. In class, while in a conversation with someone, and when reading. Over the last few years I've become EXTREMELY insecure and I know that has a lot to do with my issues. Does anyone have advice? I don't know how to tackle this problem. I don't know what first step to take. I feel very anxious and confused.

might be undiagnosed ADHD- during adulthood inattentiveness gets more predominant while hyperactivity and impulsively gets less. but whether that's a part or not, you're totally right when you mention that it's a bad habit. the good news is that bad habits can be broken. there are some great classroom and study techniques that you can use. you can definitely succeed!
ReplyYou would need to go and get it checked out. Its hard to know really. Anxiety and other mental illnesses can cause you to lose focus. Doesn't mean it's a "mental disability" ( autism spectrum etc.. )
Little tip of advice in regards to this would be, to make sure you find a professional psychologist or therapist with legitimate credentials. PhD at best, who has experience for a decent amount of time. You want someone to really evaluate you and help you,not make matters worst or misdiagnose you. It happens but you want to ensure it doesn't. Look into a professional that you can click with too, it might make the experience alot easier. I doubt you want to be helped by someone who makes you feel judged. So, it might take a few tries before you find the right one. If you can afford it or if they're free services out there where you are. I encourage you to go for it and check.
