After a tiresome day of you dragging me around to every little shop in the city, we finally stopped to catch our breath. We found a little bench where you dropped your shopping bags down, a perfect place to sit. The bench at the end of the pier overlooked the ocean, and gave us a perfect view of the oncoming sunset. Romantic? Well I sure hope she thinks so.
The salty ocean breeze hit our face, nipping coldly at our noses and causing a liquid layer to enclose our lashes. I noticed you shivered so of course I took my sweatshirt off and wrapped it around you.
I'd hoped that wasn't too forward, but out of the corner of my eye I did see you pull it tighter around yourself.
"All the places we went and you didn't think to buy a jacket?" I said, and you chuckled little. I can't flirt.
I overthink a lot of things, but you saying that you didn't get one because you knew I was wearing one struck me as odd.
The seagulls sang their ocean song to the rhythm of the pulsing waves all while the noise pollution of the crowd died out.
I was reluctant to break the peaceful silence, but I didn't want to risk boring her.
"I'm really glad we got to hang out before I have to go...you know?"
Her gaze still fixed on the cooling hues of the setting sun, she replied, "Yeah me too."
And again we sat in silence, this time with a hint of suspense clinging to the cold air. She then looked up at me and asked, "Do you really have to move? There are Universities here you know..."
I didn't want to go. At all really. My parents want me to, I don't have a say.
"I could end up being your Doctor one day. Plus, my family would probably have my head if I stayed..." I looked away, and then back to the ocean, and back at her, and away again, and it continued like that for a good while.
The sky was dark now, but the warmth and brilliance still remained in her eyes. She smiled and leaned he forehead on my shoulder.
I felt a warmth in my body, and especially in my face. I wanted so badly to be able to kiss her, but I couldn't...
She stood up, clenching my sweatshirt around her, and made her way to the rail to admire the water.
I followed her, first standing only near her, until she looked back at me. This was it. We've been so close for 5 years, and this was my last chance to tell her.
Meeting her at the railing, we gazed at the rippling reflection of the moon on the water.
There was rising tension as our bodies moved closer towards each other until our warmth met at our shoulders.
I looked to her lovingly, and she met my eye contact.
Her hand slid closer to mine as they rested on the railing.
The world was black all but the moonlight cast on her face and her.
The ocean, the birds, all the noise of the world faded away, except for my beating heart.
Now or never. I could ruin everything...but I have to say something....
I felt hear flood my face as she held eye contact.
I finally started, with nervousness flowing to the brim and every doubt and shred of confidence clashing in a war of raging hormones , "...so...um..." This was my only chance!
"Yes?" Was she waiting for it?
".....Co-"
Caught by the sudden rush of her body against mine, she pressed her lips softly against mine.
Everything was perfect.
But.
Then she stepped back.
And an expression of embarrassment and guilt swept her face.
But neither of us reacted for a short moment...she began to frantically apologize. She looked as if she was going to cry.
But she grasped the corners of the sweatshirt she was cozy in.
And she paused to look at me.
And I held out my arms, as she fell into my embrace.
We laughed, and we just held onto each other like that, until all the tension and embarrassment fell away.
I just wish it had actually ended like that...
