I had a terrible day at work yesterday. Nothing was going right, someone fell, everyone was angry or upset. It was rough.
But in the middle of all this there was two bright moments that I locked away in my mind and heart to think about later. I took care of a patient who was originally from Germany years ago. She told me that she married a man that was from Yugoslavia. She told me that at first she didn't like him but her mother gave her some sound advice and she ended up marrying him and was very happy. The specific saying she told me was this: "What is good you kick with your feet. What is bad you hold in your hands." She said it took her awhile to figure out what her mother meant by that. So now I'm scratching my head trying to figure it out.
She told me funny and sad stories about taking citizenship classes and tests so she could become a U.S. citizen. One particular story, which I'm sure wasn't true, (she crossed herself and swore it was) involved someone cheating and writing answers for a test in their underwear. She had me in tears I was laughing so hard.
Later in the day when she was getting ready to leave and I was saying goodbye, she reached out, grabbed my hand, and said "I thank God for having met you. I thank you all for taking such good care of me. May God always bless you and bring you peace and joy."
It was like God had taken this woman and placed her at the right place and time and put the exact words I needed to hear into her heart. I was so grateful for those words and her kind, old hands on mine.
My job can be difficult but I am blessed with these rare simple and sweet moments.
