It’s 9:49 PM. It’s completely dark outside except for the vague smudges of lit windows on the hill. There’s no noise but the gentle rushing of distant traffic that drifts through the open window. It’s only open an inch or two, just enough to let in the chilly night breeze. The cold air feels amazing on my face, a refreshing break from the warmth of the room. The radiator space heater is on its lowest setting, but the room is still incredibly well-heated. It’s also dark, since the main lights are off, cutting off the rest of the room. My dimmed lamp is the main source of light, illuminating my workspace from the left. On the right are three small candles that cast wavering golden glows on the pale sage walls. The light barely reaches the candles printed on the calendar above the light wood-printed desk. On the desk are potted succulents, intertwined with star-shaped fairy lights. A zebra plant sits in a wide ceramic bowl painted pale blue right next to the lamp. A succulent with fat frosted bluish leaves sits in a plastic pot near the middle, next do a “marine mist” scented candle. It doesn’t smell like the sea, but it does smell nice. A smaller clipping of another succulent sits in a foil cup. Behind it is a well-made ceramic mug patterned with deep, cool blue and white filled with pencils, pens, a pair of scissors, and a single dried rose. In the right corner, behind the pencil cup, is an aloe in a taller tan clay pot and a glass-corked vial of water. Along the edge and towards the front of the desk is a small myrtlewood box with deep purple lining the inside. It’s filled with witchy findings, including a piece of amethyst on a fine chain, a large agate, purple linen bags, a bottle of rose quartz, vials of gold flakes, a hagstone on a blue ribbon, a copper bracelet, a rust-colored worry stone, a gnawed bone, a snakeskin, and chunks of sunstone, fluorite, jasper, aventurine, and turquoise. Leaning against the box is the lower jaw of a small animal, and on either side of the jaw are tea candles. The light from the lamp is soft enough that the other lights are still bright and the night air chills my fingers as I type. This corner of my room has a very calm, nighttime desert witch aesthetic, what with the succulents, candles, crystals, and bones. It’s the perfect aesthetic for a bedroom. It’s beautiful. This is my happy place and I want to remember it.
