When living life, it's important to remain true to one's own values. Without principles, life becomes chaotic. And, to me, these morals consist of honesty, maturity, and altruism.
When someone leads a dishonest life, you can't trust them. You don't know who they truly are, their intentions, aspirations, and so forth. Point is, you don't know them -- and not knowing someone is equivalent to befriending a stranger.
When someone leads an immature lifestyle, that person is incapable of empathizing, is self-centered, and cannot hold themselves accountable for their own mistakes. Together, these fundamental flaws embolden someone to remain ignorant, to minimize others' plights, and continue to perpetuate the same inequalities that continue to divide us. To me, this quality is more than essential, it's necessary. Unfortunately, many seem to lack it.
When someone adopts a selfish lifestyle, well, it's simple: they refuse to give back to the same community that helped them succeed. Without selflessness, our world would turn to shambles. I deem it necessary to always reflect and do what you can to help those that helped you. Whether this person helped raise you or just helped you stay afloat for a short period of time, without the collective guidance of all them, you wouldn't be the person you are today.
If you feel you lack one or more of these, take this as a challenge to be more truthful, mature, and selfless in the coming year. No, don't make it your "New Year's Resolution," because those tend to fail two months into the year. Instead, make it your own resolution -- an intimate one. Love is the foundation of societies, communities, families, and all else in life -- without it, we cannot progress. But in order to love, we need to know each other, trust each other, and help one another.
Happy New Years to all. I'm wishing you all with a fruitful year, a year full of love, prosperity, and well-being.
