I don’t want to be told right now to go see a therapist, or even to feel better. I just have two questions about my self harm that I need answered.
1. I don’t cut, I scratch. I have two scratch marks on my wrist. They’re not both straight, so they don’t look like an accident. What cover story could I use for that? Saying a pet did it isn’t an option, everyone knows I don’t have any pets.
2. I also frequently scratch the back of my right hand, so it often looks red and sometimes you can see temporary marks, but usually not. What cover story should I use? I told a few friends I have a soap allergy, but idk who would buy that.

get bandaids to cover them then say that they are from you falling on something...like concrete. People get scratches from running into brick buildings too. I'm not gonna support self-harm, obviously, but i understand the desire to cover up things.

ReplyHey bud, I am a person who also has this issue. Specifically, I have NSSI and I scratch my inner arm to the point that I bleed and have to wear bandages for a while. My mom once saw the mark, and it looked nothing like what an accident would look like. I told her I scratched it on something and didn't immediately go to hide it. That threw her off the track. If you are a student who uses a backpack with a binder, you can say that you scratched yourself on that (binders are evil), this will also work for the on the hand scratches. I would change that out with it being itchy or the soap allergy (it actually isn't that bad of an explanation) and the binder, but don't do it in a pattern.
Like I said before, I am in the same boat, and I think that forcing you into talking about it with a person could be worse. I know I shut down when I even think of telling my therapist about it. Make sure you clean the wounds with antibiotic ointment, but not alcohol because that can hurt the skin.
Life sucks, but try and hang in there because there are always little things that can make it better. Feeling bad is human.
If you want to talk, I am always free.
