I’m doing jazz ensemble for band this year (I’m a guitarist) and I have gone to a few lessons. I hate it. I haven’t done nearly enough theory work do be in this class, and since it’s not a lesson I can’t get much help from the teachers. I pretty much sit there confused while everyone else plays the circle of fifths and moves on to site reading and playing the song. Band gives me extreme anxiety, and I feel like throwing up every lesson. It sucks the fun out of playing, and because it’s too hard, I procrastinate with practices. (It’s not a case of “ohh it’s okay just practice!” The level of playing is much too high for me to play successfully in the band.) On the application form, it says that this is a commitment for the year. I know I’ll be miserable and anxious increasingly up until the lesson. I want to work something out but my parents are going through deaths in the family and I would feel selfish for making them persuade the school to let me quit-especially since the price tag on joining was approx 175 US dollars. What do I do? I’m utterly miserable, I cannot keep up and hate the lessons.

Note: I don’t mean I just hate the lessons, I have panic attack problems and always feel like I’ll break down just standing there while everyone else is playing. Either that or I’ll burst into tears. Hasn’t happened yet, but it’s likely
Replyswtich to acoustic, you will enjoy it more
ReplyThen quit. Your time and you're not enjoying it.. and you're paying to not enjoy it. Even your parent will understand that you tried but if it makes you miserable that's all there is to it. Tell you parents just what you wrote here and they'll understand, they love you and got the lesson to help you find joy.. not misery. Keep practicing or find different instructors, all this means it THIS learning style doesn't work for you.
ReplyThank you for your help. I think I’ll email the band director and see if there is a way to quit. It’s not like I’m leaving the rhythm section with no guitarist, there’s a completely competent guitarist already there. Thanks again guys
