I am applying to college and here is the essay question:
Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
I really have 0 idea on what to write about. I have never had any kind of problem, and even if I did, my parents has always been solving them for me. The only problem I can remember are 2 problems:
-Deciding what courses to take for next year because of my packed schedule
-Thinking of what problem to mention in this essay
Can you guys give me any ideas? Can I use examples of friendship/family problems? Or like what the heck to I even write? What would you guys have written about if you guys were me?

I've got a little going on. My health is a concern. I see the specialist on Tuesday. I have an adult child of 27 who is married and both are focused on career....
Its really important to find something that is important to you. They're asking you to show something you're passionate about and how you are a problem solver. What is an important to you? Do you stand up for animal rights, any charities, issues in your neighborhood, our country, the world, our ecosystem etc? If we were to lend you our struggles he would not be able to write with the same passion and feeling and that would translate onto your essay. Best of luck :)
Reply-Flint Michigan water crisis. The people who live there haven't had clean or safe water since 2014. I would try to find a solution for that. I would stop putting billions of dollars into building a wall, and put that money into finally giving these people clean drinking water.
-Wiki Leaks. It is an interesting subject that you could dig into. Is it moral? Is it not? Some say that wikileaks is GOOD because they are just releasing information that the public deserves to know. For example, they released a video of a U.S. military helicopter full of snipers killing innocent, unarmed citizens. If Wikileaks hadn't released this video, no one would have known about the horrible act that these U.S. soldiers had commited. They murdered unarmed civilians and laughed about it, and the government tried to cover it up. And wikileaks said NOPE.
But on the other hand, wikileaks has also caused a lot of harm. They did a lot of stuff with the election, stuff with Russia.
This could be really interesting if you present both sides.
-Get rid of the electoral college in the U.S.
-Change the voting age to 16, and how you think if you are old enough to drive you should have a say in elections. If you are old enough to get shot and killed in classrooms, you should have the right to vote on gun laws. You should have a right to vote out the politicians out of office who support the NRA, or won't even support the banning of bump stocks (that allow a mass shooter to mow down and kill dozens of people at a time) at age 16.
ReplyYes, friendship and family problems are a good start. They’re looking for something personal, something close to your heart. Write about that. Maybe start by just writing down whatever comes to mind, then go back and edit.
ReplyI would've written about domestic violence.
ReplyOf course, the problem should be something you really care about, but I honestly think it would be so cool and introspective to write about what problem to mention in the essay. WRite about your creative process, how much thinking you did, what lengths you went to write and find something to write about, how badly you want to go to college, what it means to you. By no means am I saying you should do this, but it definitely is an option! Good luck!
