“The eared-one in a shade of autumn,
Shall hatch from a sunset colored egg,
And dam the rivers that run red with blood,
To reverse the cursed age and era of sorrow.
Her without horns and a tail of fur,
With eyes the color of a sunrise-painted sky,
She shall raise the world to joy and abundance.
And end the age of sadness.”
”Pisik…”
A solitary egg from a nest, colored like the leaves of autumn, was licked with a raspy forked tongue. The dragon standing above the egg knew what she had done. She had created the Pillidragan, the prophecy hybrid. The one that was supposed to heal the world with “special powers.” It had taken her years to find this egg, hidden in a clutch of three. All others were smashed. But this, this was the one. The one that was colored as if it had been thrown into a molten sunset. The others were a mottled brown, the ones that would destroy the world. Not heal it. That is why dragons have been breeding forever, trying to breed this one egg. Imagine all the Cedupilli lives lost. For good reasons, of course, the dragada said to herself in her mind. This was her egg. She had created the Pillidragan. Alas, the prophecy would be fulfilled. And she would do everything to protect this special egg, even if it would cost her life.
Ever since she had remembered, Pisik had been stared at. She had unnatural, pointed ears on the top of her head. A long, furry tail extended from the base of her body to the ground. Her wings were dusted with fur, and her odd colour was autumn and her markings like sunlight coming through lone tree leaves. Her eyes were as if you melted a sunset in a cauldron and painted her irises. They shone like diamonds, and her wings protruded with a red coloring. Yes, she knew she was adopted. Of course, she could tell. Her mother was huge and scaly while she seemed like a hopeless pet. Especially to her siblings. Her mother, Atithya, was a golden colored towering dragon with blood-orange colored wings and an elegant complexure. Pisik was extremely jealous of her mother’s beauty and elegance. Her mother had an air of a queen, and long talons clacked as she strutted through the forest. No leaves could cushion the ruckus her mother’s feet made. Her siblings, Bradar, Reka, Sodari, and Luna were just the same. Only she was different.
Her siblings were ruthless to her--everyone except Reka, one of her sisters. Bradar was the worst, for he was the only boy and their bigwings, expecting for everyone else to be perfect. He was Pisik’s mother’s favorite. Luna was quiet and secluded, she was adopted, too, but the case wasn’t as bad as Pisik. At least Luna looked like an actual average dragon, like she should.
In the ancient dragon tongue, Pisik’s name meant “cat.” She assumed she was a sort of hybrid, maybe. Cat-dragon or dragon-cat, she proposed to her mother. But at this great find, her mother batted her with a great paw and sent her stumbling across rocky ground.
“Never say the word “cat,” to me again,” Atithya growled.
In the background, Bradar and Sodari giggled. They teased her, stomped on her long, bushy tail, called her names, and threw pebbles at her pelt.
“Mouse hunter!”
“Dog-prey!”
“Cat-dung,” Sodari would answer after Bradar, wanting to be the favorite, too.
Luckily, Pisik had grown used to the constant yammerings and blows that her brother and sister sent at her. No matter how much they hurt, she would always get back up and proceed with life. After all, that was how it was meant to be. Right?
