Everyone wears a mask
From doctors to the grocery store cashiers
Some times we wear masks without others noticing
Ones with big cheesy grins
It keeps people from seeing what’s real
It keeps all the sad stuff locked away where they can’t find it
Now nobody can see how I feel
Nobody can see the tears I hide
Nobody can see my yearning towards a blade
Nobody can know how much I want to leave
They’ll say:
You have a great life, be thankful
You shouldn’t be sad, everything is going your way
So I put up shields
On the sides with little messages
Just things like:
I’m fine
Its nothing
I’m just tired
Simple, but they get the job done
Nobody asks questions
Nobody dives deeper
Not into the years, I was bullied
Can I call it bullying?
I was never punched
She never stole my lunch money
All she did was make my life miserable
Make me more drawn to a blade
Make the intrusive thoughts worsen
Made that cliff look awfully tempting
Now maybe she is the reason that my self-esteem is lower than the bottom rung on the limbo bar
Maybe she’s the reason my walls are higher then snoop dog
Or maybe is societies general need to push away any trace of negative emotion
Because being sad is bad
And if your brain doesn’t produce the same amounts of serotonin that everyone else’s does, keep it to yourself
Because nobody cares
Or at least that’s how it feels
So maybe that’s why the masks are on so tight
The indents are causing red lines on my face
I don’t know how to take off the mask
