the safe scent of smokey barbecue and campfire wafts through the air
signifying laughter and joy as
i sit on the dock
streaks of gold and pink and speckled clouds freckling the deep blue universe as the sun makes it daily departure
i sit on the dock
disease races from country to country, state to state, town to town
yet while this occurs
i sit on the dock
enveloped in the earth and the lake while light continues to drain from the sky
i sit on the dock
wondering how the sun can continue to rise and set each day
while people are gasping for breath
artificial lungs dragging them through life
and yet the sunset blazes on and unimaginable tragedy persists.
the sun never fails to set
pink blue and gold signifying the day’s end.

the watercolor of the sky could make one believe that he is not surrounded by an earth filled with heartbreak and terror
each day as hundreds choke,
their lungs desperate for oxygen that they are unable to inhale
lives that had been flourishing days before rapidly shriveling and overcome by sickness
yet as this occurs the fiery sky masks the brokenness of the world
the colors over the lake concluding a day of unbearable fear and heartbreak and death
gazing up at the contradiction that is the ethereal sky
i sit on the dock
