Lol okay, I'd never post this or talk about this on any of my social media, or in real life for that matter, because for some reason, it feels like there's a sort of stigma around teenagers watching animated shows/movies etc. Like, I don't understand why I need to feel bad for enjoying a GOOD show. Everyone should be able to freely express their love for a franchise, even if it seems 'childish'.
Sure, it may be (originally) targeted towards like 9-11 year old boys but this show is something I grew up with. Now that I'm an almost-17-year-old-girl, admitting that I even watch cartoons is a one-way-ticket to Shame-and-Tease-Ville, so obviously, I keep this a secret - but dARn I love this show man.
I know that there are some really popular cartoons that seem more 'socially acceptable' for older people to watch, like Steven Universe or The Simpsons, only because the fanbases are really huge. However, the show I'm talking about isn't as large, but it is big and the fandom is UTTER CHAOS. And that show is-
Ninjago.
Yep. If you haven't heard of it, it's an animated show about these Lego (yes, Lego, as in the plastic toys) Ninjas that fight all sorts of evil. Search it up. They even made a Warner Bros film in 2017.
At the first glance, pretty much anyone would be absolutely uninterested and unimpressed. I was at first - but this show started in around 2012, and it was my brother that got me well into it. The 13th Season of Ninjago is coming out this summer and I AM EXCITED. But I wanna just explain a bit as to why I, a 16 year old girl almost on her way to university, is obsessed with a Lego cartoon. (this feels like a rant, but like, the opposite - an excited rant? xD )
The first few seasons were fun, family-friendly sorta stuff. Lots of stupid jokes too lol. Back then, it's just your typical cartoon, which is nice. But much later on, past maybe Season 7, the plotlines took a much different turn, and that's when I was mega-hyped for the series. I mean, don't let the animation and colours fool you, THIS SHOW GETS DARK.
Characters develop mental health issues, characters are killed onscreen, an old woman drugs two teenage boys in order for them to hallucinate..... (the fandom over-analysed it a bit much haha).
But the show also gets real emotional too. Parents, friends, lovers die. Stress gets to the heroes. But the most beautiful thing is the friendship portrayed between the main ninjas. Like, who woulda thought a ninja cartoon would hit the feels so hard?
As fictional as this show is, the messages it portrays is so true and real, the characters are all so likeable and the adventures are so in-depth and mesmerising.
Ninjago is undeniably, one of the best written shows to date - even better than live-action tv shows. The music used in the shows are awesome too - Ninjago got nominated for an Emmy this year and I couldn't help but feel so proud for this small little cartoon that I grew up with.
This was so cringey and embarrassing to write, oh god π but I'm serious, if you're looking for a new, potentially animated, adventure-humour-romance inclusive show, Lego Ninjago is the one. [comment if you want more info hehe, i'm practically a pro.]
Thank you to whoever managed to read this - Even though this is about something so supposedly childish, it makes me happy, and in these dark times where my anxiety suffocates me day to day, I need to express something positive once in a while, and this is it. :)
