Oh South Africa, my land.
As a child your fertile ground nourished my stomach.
As I grew your rich sources of knowledge nourished my mind.
Now hate is fueling your people
And here I am, abandoning you, I’m sorry.
Oh South Africa, my country.
As a child your summer rains lulled me to sleep.
As I grew, your history sparked my soul.
Now, your people are cold against me.
And here I am, abandoning you, I’m sorry.
Oh South Africa, my home.
As a child your locks protected me.
As I grew your walls gave me comfort.
Now, I am forced to flee
I am abandoning you, I’m sorry.
Oh South Africa, my nation.
As a child, your vibrant spirit brought life.
As I grew, your culture amazed me.
Now, I am on trial, my only crime? The colour of my skin.
I am abandoning you, I’m sorry.
My beautiful country, I am abandoning you. I’m sorry.
Since i was very young I was assumed racist because of the colour of my skin, blamed for the crimes of my ancestors as if I had personally passed the laws to oppress. I am told I don’t belong here based only on the colour of my skin, was i not raised under the same African sun? How dare you tell me my country is not my own? How dare you threaten any of this country’s people “one bullet, one farmer” right? Make it sound so simple, like you aren’t talking about a human life.
This country is under siege and her own people are behind the trigger. You want to say you are correcting the wrongs of the past. But all you are doing is attributing to the wrongs of the present, where will this country lie in the future?
People tell me i must pick a side. I tell them it stops with me. There are no sides. Only South Africa and her people.
I was born in South Africa... so was my mother, and her mother, and her mother... and yet you dare say that I am not African? Please explain why the lack of melanin in my skin means more than my nationality of birth. Was i not raised embraced by her sun? Does my love for this country not flow through my veins like blood? Tell me. Why? Why do I not belong? Why does our nation turn on each other when the only thing holding us back is our leaders? Momma Africa has always provided and yet, even once we received our freedom, our leaders continued to tear her apart and sell her for scraps.
My beautiful country, i am abandoning you, I’m sorry.

I only recently learned much about what's been going on in South Africa. I'm so sorry you have to leave the country you grew up in and love.
