My twenty-one year old daughter lives on her own and is self-supporting. Some weeks back, she received a five hundred dollar traffic citation. She thought she'd be able to earn enough extra cash to pay it off in time, but it looks like that won't be possible. We spoke on the phone this afternoon and she informed me that she's looked into the available options and has decided to ask the judge for weekends in jail in lieu of paying the fine.
Her court date is on Tuesday. I've offered to pay the fine for her, but she declined, saying it was her responsibility to deal with it. While I admire her determination to stand on her own two feet, I still can't help but feel there's got to be a better way. She seems to have her mind made up. She lives in a rather low crime area, particularly when it comes to violent crime. So maybe her time in the county jail won't be so bad? I don't know, but I'm still worried. Should I continue trying to talk her out of this or let her deal with this as she sees fit instead?
