I‘be grown up in a catholic/christian family. we’ve always celebrated the frequent holidays such as Christmas, Easter, etc. i am hoping to move out within the next year or so (of my parent’s house) but I’m afraid I’ll never be able to escape the religious holidays. I am an atheist and decided I was one when I was 14. I don’t want to celebrate those holidays anymore once I’m able to move out, but I know that I won’t be able to avoid them forever. for example, if I ever get married, get a boyfriend or live with friends who are religious. of course I participate out of respect but I strongly don’t believe in any of it.

Atheist and Lesbian in a Muslim family
Hey I'm an atheist in a Muslim family and country, I'm also a Lesbian and I've been living this life in secret, i never mentioned this to anyone ever in my life...
These holidays began as pagan rituals and were adopted by the catholic church and so were the statues they brought into the church to lure pagans. These holidays have also become part of our culture. There are a lot better churches around than that big business known as the catholic church. I hope you believe in God one day.
ReplyYou don't have to believe in holidays like Christmas to celebrate them. Lots of atheists celebrate them. Or if you don't want to celebrate at all, for personal reasons, that's ok too.
ReplyAtheist here. And I love celebrating Christmas. Lights, good cheer, catchy songs, giving gifts, gingerbread cookies... nothing religious about those. I would celebrate Hannukah or Ramadan or Diwali if they were celebrated where I live. Try to think of it that way. If you truly don't believe in those depictions of god, then you shouldn't be offended indulging in any/all of them. Sort of like, if you're not a fan of sports, you should be able to sit in either the home bleachers or the visitors and enjoy the hot pretzels :)
ReplyHey you could just enjoy the holidays without any strings attached.
ReplyIt's your human right to remove yourself from any religious festival. You don't have to justify yourself to anyone. It's disrespectful of others to expect you to participate if you do not want to.
