Hi all,
I am a senior in college now. Pre med, i graduate in July. As many of you know, the current system of education pretends to care about learning but at the end of the day, it all boils down to grades. Especially for medical school, grades matter a lot.
I had added a physiology class this semester. Along with cell bio, biochem, ochem 2 plus 2 labs..my course load this semester has been very difficult maintain. My issue comes from my physiology class. I had added the class a week after it started. This was because i decided to drop out of physics. The professor had an extra credit assignment due on Friday. I added it monday. Due to catching up with homework from the first week (hw was due even before the first day of class), and the stress of a new semester, I didn’t submit the extra credit. I saw it, saw the due date and didn’t submit it. My reasons were (1.) I was working on homework that I had already missed from the first week, (2.) extra credit is typically open all semester for all the other classes i’ve taken, so I didn’t think the due date was important, (3.) I didn’t think I would need extra credit. I had contacted the professor a day after it was due because the submission was closed; he blatantly said No. i will not reopen it. Now with only 3 weeks left in the class and with a 90.77 grade, I’m desperate for it. The extra credit is worth 3% of my grade so it would take me to A. I met with the professor for 30 minutes via zoom to beg for it. He has given me a challenge to decide if he would be willing to. I have to answer by Monday three questions. Is it fair to let me do the extra credit? Is it fair to the students who submitted on time? Is it fair to give it to me when there are other students who also didn’t submit it and don’t care about it? Obviously the man is one of unmovable, unrealistic expectations. So can anyone give me a compelling argument as to why I should be given the chance seeing that I have been persistently asking him for it unlike other students? What is fairness? Is it achievable?

Is it bad to skip an assignment?
I'm stupid at doing my work, so naturally, I procrastinate all the time instead of paying attention in class. I already have a D in math, not because of skippin...
Is it fair to let you do the extra credit? Unfortunately, it's not really fair because other students did work hard to get their extra credit done by the due date (not that you aren't working hard, it's just that you had make-up work holding you back, but professors don't like excuses :( sorry it sucks). The answer to the professor's third question would be that it is also not fair because people who did not care about the extra credit assignment back then, may also care about it now like you do.
Honestly, I would say, don't negotiate for something unfair, but maybe instead try to negotiate for something fair. Maybe ask for different extra credit assignment that is open to the entire class. I mean learning right now isn't even easy, there's Covid and all that, then you were behind because you added the class a little late..... couldn't everyone benefit from some extra credit during hard time like this? ;)
I am not saying it will work, but it could work, you never know.....
