Dear sir,
I want to profusely thank you for what you did. You didn’t even know my name, or my sister’s name, but you still showed me such a great act of kindness.
You might not have known this, but my 5-year old sister and I had just got back from Albertson’s. I had bought her candy and sweets, and I promised to take her to Coldstones for ice cream. It was supposed to be my treat.
I had inserted my debit card, and it got rejected. I tried again, and again...three times. You were standing at the side of the counter nearest to the door, picking up a cake for some birthday or graduation or other occasion. I didn’t know you, and you didn’t know me. I was just some skinny young teenager.
I was close to tears, and my face was burning with embarassment...I was starting to tug my sister from the counter, and she was reaching for the ice cream, confused. I shook my head and mumbled that we couldn’t get it.
That’s when you stepped in. You asked the cashier how much it was and she told you. Without hesitating, you pulled out your wallet again and paid for the small dish of ice cream. I was stunned and confused. It took me a few seconds until the cashier looked at me and said, “He just paid for your order. Thank you.”
I nervously took the small cup, grabbed a spoon and handed it to my little sister. I looked up and thanked you again and again. You just smiled and nodded. “Of course. You’re welcome.” I thanked you again and walked out of the store, holding my sister’s hand tightly, brushing away a stray tear with my other hand. We both sat outside a movie theater and ate.
I never found out your name. Or what that cake was for. But I wonder if you thought about it afterwards or if it was just one of the many kind things you’ve done.
I just want to thank you.
