Dear Avery,
First of all, I’d like to say that I’m not writing this letter to compliment you on ‘your book’. I’m here to tell you how sorry I am about your mother. I know that that book wasn’t your idea, it was hers. You didn’t want to write it, or promote it, and I saw the sadness in your eyes. You didn’t want to attend pride parades, or to visit politicians at the Capitol. But she made you do it, made you feel like it was your responsibility as a trans girl to be the poster child for the entire community. But I see you as more than a poster girl.
She made money off you, treated you like you were her cash cow and not a human being. I’m so sorry you had to go through that photo shoot. The way that those filmmakers portrayed you, they made it seem like that’s what you wanted to do. But I knew it was your mother pulling the strings in the background.
I am so sorry for everything that she did to you, Avery. Know that there is at least one person out there that sees what really happened— me. I’m rooting for you. Hoping that the rest of your childhood is normal, just like you always wanted it to be: no more protests, no more books, no more photo shoots. Just Avery.
I hope you’re doing well.
Olivia
