I really do not understand this society.
As a conservative, I'm discriminated against because I choose to think for myself. I'm discriminated against because I choose to not live in fear.
I choose to not wear a mask because I have something called an immune system. I have an entire internal defense system that has protected me from so many maladies that could easily have killed me, yet I'm supposed to be afraid of a virus that has a fatality rate of less than 5%? A virus with an 85-90% rate of mild symptoms?
A coworker once claimed that oxygen saturation decrease due to masks is bullshit. So... covering your breathing holes, therefore decreasing air intake, therefore decreasing oxygen saturation... doesn't decrease oxygen saturation?
And what about non-mask contagions? Oral/nasal contraction isn't the only method. Yes, it's the primary entry, but it's not the only way. What I mean is, our hands are our primary way of interacting with what's not inside our body. If our hands are not sterile, it doesn't matter what's covering our face because we instinctively touch our faces (where our mouths and noses are) with our hands. AND, regardless of how often we clean surfaces, and anything else anyone else in society might consider touching, there's still going to be something remaining that we just can never completely kill/sterilize.
AND I happen to have asthma and carry my inhaler everywhere I go. While most businesses in my area are fairly lax and understanding if you legitimately can't wear a mask safely, my job does NOT understand. They literally do not care if you need supplemental oxygen due to COPD or shit like that. Got only one half-working lung and need tubes up your nose connected to two massive tanks full of pressurized 100% oxygen? "Uh, no, sorry, we can't serve you because you're not wearing a mask." Got PTSD due to whatever causes you to suffer an anxiety attack whenever wearing anything that covers your face? "Uh, no, sorry, we can't serve you because you're not wearing a mask." Don't want to wear a mask because you know your immune system is strong enough to fight it? "Uh, no, sorry, we won't serve you because your fearlessness might rub off on us sheeple, and fear and herd-mentality is what keeps us alive. Your individuality is a threat to us, so please leave before we start thinking for ourselves." Ugh... Granted, my asthma's not quite as bad as it used to be, though my allergies are starting to kick up due to the seasonal crap, but I still carry the inhaler because shit happens. I really didn't know how bad my company would be on this...
People, please...
-We have immune systems. Those who die from COVID, the majority of them already have a weakened immune system, whether they know it or not.
-If you're so afraid of this, just stay home. Find a job that'll let you work from home. Order food/delivery, as most businesses are already involved in this home delivery deal. If you need new furniture, shoes, clothes, whatever, just go to Amazon or something like that.
If you disagree with me, that's fine. I have no problem with people believing what they want to believe. I'm just here to vocalize my opinion, and hopefully shed some light onto public issues. If you refuse to be open to consideration to other opinions, that's okay. I, too, once was closed-minded. Then a spark of light opened my eyes to the fact that my opinions could change. Trust me, this whole COVID thing is not my first opinion, nor will it be my last, so please understand that. Please understand that my opinions on certain other issues tend to adjust according to new information. This COVID issue, though, will not. Again, immune systems. Again, fearlessness.
I pray that everyone...
Well, I really just do not know...
Want to continue to live in fear? Go ahead. Cower. Piss yourself whenever a leaf falls ten feet away.
Choices, people...
Live in fear?
...
Or live fearlessly?
...
(I think living without fear makes for a much more enjoyable life.)

I figure if the virus kills me, then it was my time to go. My dad got the shot, but I did not. I did not think my life was worth preserving because it has been an epic struggle just to deceive myself into being alive. I do not enjoy living in this world, so I will let someone else get their shot if it helps them live. Regarding contraction methods, the simulations claim the virus can travel +30 feet in a well ventilated building, and direct airborne contact is needed for infection. The masks are said to help, but the water molecules still escape from gaps around the mask. People will do what they think will help keep more people alive, noble in purpose, but there is only so much we can do. Now we need to get an investigative team in Wuhan to find out what kind of experiments the Chinese were doing and how the samples breached containment.
ReplyPreferably an investigation unit not backed by the Chinese Communist Party
ReplyI agree that we should be considerate of those who cannot wear masks due to medical reasons. That said, here's a few points to consider:
1) The size of openings on the masks we wear should ideally be large enough to pass small molecules like oxygen in, while filtering relatively large virus particles. Quick googling tells me that oxygen and carbon monoxide molecules are ~0.0003 micrometers large, while virus is ~0.3 micrometers large, which is at least 1000 times larger. So unless we are wearing incredibly tight-woven masks or practically plastic bags over our mouth, we shouldn't be blocking out oxygen. There is plenty of room to filter out the virus but not molecular gases.
2) Immune systems have limits. Especially when it comes to diseases and pathogens that are new to us. As an example, recall how small pox carried to the now-American continent by Europian travelers wiped out a major portion of the native population. As humans, of course they had immune systems. But when exposed to viruses that their bodies had never experienced, the immune system didn't kick in fast enough to save many.
3) Being "bold" for oneself is one thing. But much like mosquitos carry malaria without being affected by it, we can be vectors of diseases for others. So your decision affects not just yourself but also your community and anyone you come in contact with.
