I have worked hard for most of my life. I have moved across the Atlantic a year ago for my career and earn a good salary. However I feel like my life is an eternal period of extreme stress followed by a short period of enjoyment and refresh. The stress is enough that I don't sleep and cannot function socially. All I do is excercise in this time, as I feel it's what I should do. I have made some mistakes at work, some of which are my fault, some of which are higher up people covering their backs by laying them at my feet. I hate my life at work, but love my life when I do get time outside it. I feel like my industry is not for me but am scared of what happens if I leave/get dismissed. Do I fight for my position or do I take this as an opportunity? Does everybody feel like this? If I leave I lose my visa, but am young enough I could find a way back. I am sick and tired of being tired.... To put this into context I have been at work in this industry 5 years and am in my late 20's. Often when work is bad I do not sleep for days, and have thoughts of escape, although nowhere near acting in them.

Sounds like it might be a good idea for you to try different forms of stress management, like meditation, or kundalini yoga (sitting down, taking breaths). There is a website featuring all sorts of follow along videos for free, called doyogawithme. These might help with sleeping, and producing deep restful sleep. Also check out binaural beats on youtube, this music emits different wavelengths to help you fall asleep. You're right, late 20's, you're still young enough to change industries if this one isn't for you. It will take a bit of courage to make that step, but you've seen those videos of famous successful so and sos, who only got their big break after 50 right? Something has to happen before you reach your breaking point, and it sounds like that might not be too far off, the mental and physical exhaustion is going to get to you, even though you're young. Hate is a strong word, and you used it to describe your work. I'm not an expert, but it seems like you're quite keen on leaving, and just looking for that push. For your health and sanity, find work you don't hate.
