This is my opinion:
1. Yes. 2. Depends on what you used to self diagnose with. Trust worthy sites? Sure.
3. If its reputable source. If what they say makes sense. If multiple sites say same thing.
4. Go when you are adult. Or keep persuading them. Worst scenario, go to reddit site and check out adhd subreddit. Im sure there are helpful info there. 5. Its pretty common. I dont think its bad thing.
ReplyJust like first comment you got, this is def just my opinion I’m not a dr., but happy to provide my take on it.
1: it’s important to self diagnose to an extent, but no, if no psychiatrist has diagnosed you officially, then it is not an official diagnosis and you and no one else should treat it as such. For instance, if let’s say my 8 year old nephew demonstrates signs of autism, the whole family can share their opinions with the parents that hey he is illustrating some signs of autism, get him checked out. That’s a fair statement. Unfair statement - hey your kid has autism go get him on meds etc etc and do x y and z… well no, unless a dr definitively gives the diagnosis after assessments and sessions, it’s not fair for anybody, family members or the person on question themselves to say so. That’s my opinion, hopefully my examples and explanations
Made sense.
Reply2- self diagnoses can be close to accurate certainly, maybe with adhd specifically I think it’d be quite easy to diagnose that. But don’t just think everything boils down nice and neat into adhd. I have bipolar and OCD, someone I’m close with has adhd and bipolar, often times if your struggling with something that’s a little bigger then yourself, you will
Need the help of therapy and psychiatry to properly deal with it. That is not weakness! That is strength! Facts are necessary, they’re doctors for reason.
Are your parents not letting you go to therapy because they’re afraid that their crap might come out in the light? Maybe not, I have no idea, but try to seriously discuss the topic with them
Again. Show them my comment for all I care. If they love you and have your best interests at heart, why and how would they not let you just see a therapist a couple times and set up an intake appt with a psychiatrist? Really?
Reply#1: Only professionals can make diagnoses. If regular people could do that, then we wouldn't need professionals.
#2: Sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. 50/50
#3: Depends on the source you are using for your knowledge. Never trust Wikipedia or 7 minute youtube clicks. It's good to trust NIH sources
#4: Why do you want to go to a therapist? Talk with your parents, ask them why.
#5: I don't have ADHD, so I can't have an opinion on this. I'm sure it affects life in a less appreciative way, but it's not unmoral.
ReplyYou can not self diagnose very much. Mental health can never be self diagnosed, anyone who says they do don't know what they are talking about. As soon as someone tells me they are self-diagnosed I think they are an idiot and have a fool for a doctor. A professional has spent decades studying (probably longer than you have been alive). They can also evaluate you for symptoms better than you can see yourself. If you have mental health issues then you aren't self evaluating very well by definition.
