Oh! Restless soul
Oh tormented spirit!
Lamenting being -
Seek comfort!
Do not remain forsaken-
Relinquish despair,
Lay down your burdens
And ye shall be free
Of me
And this depravity to which you cling.
Please! I beg of you
Ethereal villain!
Oh terrible beauty,
Break away - now! - from your unbidden cage!
Claim the mantle of death
Over your own predestined path.
Rebel against what would - and
Descend into the
Underworld -
Filled with
many o’friend.
Oh! Restless soul
Oh tormented spirit!
Be at peace.

So this is my first attempt at a narrative style poem. Normally I write about how I’m feeling and it’s just a messy, scrambled mess of emotions as I try to fit all I'm feeling into a few words on a page. Don’t get me wrong- I love that and I will always love that. It’s such a cathartic process and writing will always be what I turn to, to express how I’m feeling. BUT- I also absolutely love reading narrative poetry, about things and experiences I have never had, but somehow still connect to.
One day I just got an idea of one of the lines and kind of just went from there. The idea is:
A human wrestles with a spirit trapped within their home and begs it to make peace and finally go to the land of the dead.
That’s what I started and led with. But then in my attempt to avoid pouring emotion into it and just write a narrative, I found myself doing what I wanted to avoid. To me now, it’s about a darkness inside, loving the comfort it provides but knowing it’s not good for you. Compelling it to leave you alone, wanting it gone, but missing it’s presence. I don’t know. Kind of nervous putting it out. I don’t think it’s great but equally I’m happy with it and that’s enough.
(Also the style is heavily inspired by Walt Whitman- I absolutely love the way he laid out and structured his poetry. I love his poetry in general actually)
