Parents

It’s weird to see how much parents can influence and completely change their kids. When I was younger, I used to love reading (I used to read popular books around that time yk typical middle school book series.) then my parents started criticizing what I was reading because they didn’t consider it real literature. I understand where they were coming from because ig they grew up with classic older literature. But I was literally a child just passing my time enjoying my books… there was nothing wrong with it. Eventually they would always make remarks on my books and call them silly and it kind of got to me to a point where I slowly stopped reading. I was always scared that my parents are disappointed I read middle school teen books and not other literature to learn or something. Then eventually, one day I stopped reading completely. Obviously I still sometimes read for school but I don’t read for fun anymore. My parents are nice and mean well but it’s just something I’ve been thinking about. I felt like I could never relate to my parents. They loved school. So they were always wanting me to keep learning and learning. And they wanted me to read more complicated and “meaningful” books ig. It’s kind of sad when I think about it. I used to love certain books I read because they were popular and they were interesting. I got so worked up that I stopped reading in general… I don’t think I’m ever going to go back into reading tho. It’s not fun for me and I feel forced to read meaningful books or something (by meaningful I mean usually have a deeper meaning than texts like older books.) I know looking back on the books I read they were a little silly but those books are for fun. But I always felt so bad I just started hating reading and hated the kind of literature that was expected of me to read. anyways that was my rant

Never feel bad for doing something that makes you happy. As long as you are bot hurting anyone, keep doing things for yourself. It's a good thing that you read, and I wish my future children would also love to read, no matter what it is they are reading.
