Trying to address this issue in a logical way seems impossible, so stream of consciousness will likely be my writing method of choice.
America is in a tough spot, and we as a generation are to blame. We are the generation of extremes. Social media has extended our view of the world from a local to a global view, which may seem like a positive at first but I view as a negative. We, as simple citizens, now have a soapbox from which we naturally feel the need to preach our ideas into existence. We simply feel that the world cannot continue on without our input on every topic, regardless of out knowledge of the situation.
We grew up getting praise for everything we did, being told that we did a great job and were a wonderful individual, better than everyone else. I see the expected value of this praise, but the realistic outcome is a generation of people who think THEY are the best because they were raised being told that. That upraising clashes with reality once moral and ethical discussions come into play in high school and higher education, and suddenly you have a generation of people who all think they are the best. Egos clash, and the extremes become reality. The liberals feel the need to compete over who is more liberal, and the conservatives feel the need to compete with who is more conservative. You were raised being the best, so why can't you be the best now? Moderate beliefs fade away as we all subconsciously drift away from a moderate position and towards the extremities of politics, simply because we are trying to live up to our childhood perfection.
In come Hillary and Trump - our all-but-certain presidential candidates. Trump is an extreme conservative who is despised by most of his own party, and Clinton is an extreme liberal who is despised by most of her own party. The vital thing that has launched these two into candidacy is OUR extreme nature. We have widened the political gap between parties far more than should be, and as such our candidates are moving with us. Trump saw the widening gap and stepped in as the "best" conservative, and his supporters took the hook. Hillary saw the gap and stepped in to prey upon the extreme feminist vote, along with extreme liberals, and suddenly she became the "best" liberal. We, as a generation, have pushed our political candidates into corners because we feel we need to be the best, and politically that means the elimination of moderate parties.
I don't know where my vote will land in the upcoming election, but I know that the current political position of my generation needs to change, or we will continue to drive a wedge between ourselves to further disastrous consequences.
