Hi everyone! I am a 14 year old from Utah. If you didn't know, most people from Utah pronounce words differently. Like mountain, Layton, and other things and we don't pronounce the T in most of them. People call that a Utahn accent but I also have another. Ever since I was young people would always make fun of some of the words I said or more like how I said them.
Whenever I say the word wrong or right it sounds totally weird to people and sometimes people don't even understand the sentences I speak because of this "accent". I don't really know where it comes from but people say I sound British sometimes depending on what I speak but other times I don't sound British but I still have some sort of accent?
I hate when people make fun of me for how I say things, even my family does it, I also hate having to repeat the same sentence to everyone including the teachers until they can understand what I said. Is this a curse? I don't know what to do at this point.

What do you do when you're very anxious and depressed
What do you do when that moment arises? I'm having difficulty in facing it. I'm anxious and depressed. I guess I always overlooked my mental health and I have a...
Nooo it's not a curse. I like accents. Some people just can't understand them. You're definitely not the only one with an accent.
Btw I don't pronounce the T in mountains either... I think that's pretty normal though
ReplySweetie, I'm a southern woman. I've been all over this country with my accent. I can make it as thick a y'alld like. 😂
Yankees don't get it . Lol
Baby, love who you are and where you're from. Those are your roots. It doesn't make you any less intelligent. If it concerns you, practice consciencelesly putting rs into your words.
ReplyHey there, it all comes down to what YOU think sounds good! You can change your accent to sound like anything you want, that's the cool thing about speaking. Even if you learned to say words 'wrong' it's no problem to retrain yourself.
I grew up speaking with an ugly local accent because that's how my parents & teachers talked. But as soon as I figured out how weird we sound (and didn't like it) I just decided to talk differently. Is there a movie or tv actor whose voice/accent you like? Just copy them. Little bits at first so nobody knows what you're doing, but eventually you can sound like anything you want. Again, if it's what YOU like to hear. Don't change yourself just because of what others say. But if it's for yourself, you can have some fun.
I started copying some British actors, nothing heavy or obvious but just enough to dump the stupid accent I was taught. Now I get compliments all the time... When I tell strangers where I'm from, they're like 'You're the first [my hometown] accent I've heard that sounds cool' lol if they only knew...
ReplyYour accent is just your regional dialect. It's nothing to be ashamed of. I grew up in the south and moved north. People used to mock me for my accent. Example when I would say the word box, this girl would go.
" bawlks". I did not pronounce it that way mind you she was just being a b*tch. Be yourself and just say words as best you can if they can't understand you. Be proud of where you're from.
