Personally , I don't think there are many truly competent nor very creative or inventive draftspeople in the illustration industry today. Certainly not on the level of Dulac and Rackham or Neilsen or even Crumb. Those were THE masters. We are still realing from the decline of the golden age of illustration.I don't think there is anybody around that truly impresses me like they do. They are timeless. I'd love to see someone come and do something on their level in 21st century. I just don't feel anybody is really reaching the heights of all illustration could actually be.

I don’t know much about illustration but I feel the way about filmmaking & music. (I’m a film composer btw)
There was definitely a golden age when people were driven by the art, but in recent years everything has become dumbed down for the sake of mass appeal. And in turn, there aren’t many masters to learn from, so new artists don’t have any incentive to push their art beyond the normal.
I guess it’s supposed to cycle around eventually. But as long as money controls the field, then art, film and music will remain with what’s popular ($$$) which amounts to nothing new or challenging.
ReplyI'm glad there is someone open minded on here that isn't fiercely defending the rubbish people are making today. It's depressing. I want someone who speaks to all generations . Its so sad that there are no true modern masters. Though I don't see what is wrong with looking back to the likes of great artists to get inspired. I just think the current generation (my generation) has no interest in true art. As you say they are in it for mass appeal and admiration. Not for the sake of their art. I wonder how many refrain from posting on social media. There has to be somone great out there and we just don't see them.

It’s funny, I had that exact thought. I bet there are people with the ideas & even the talent to make great art, but there’s no inspiration because all around is mediocrity. I think in the past we had golden ages of art because artists would inspire & challenge each other to be better. But today, it’s kinda like a marathon where everyone is just lazily strolling along. Why bother exerting yourself?
Anyway thanks for posting these thoughts. Like you said, you can’t say this kind of stuff on an art forum because they’d take it personally and get all defensive.
If you happen to be an artist yourself, I hope you find a reason to put your work out there and keep improving it, even though there isn’t much driving you to excell.
