I CANNOT comprehend how anyone could see caring, understanding and catering for a greater variety of humans than our species ever has before as a step backwards.
The majority of people that do think like this have probably been afforded the luxury of being treated as the norm since their birth. And centuries ago, when the laws, social rules and such influencing our modern ones were first decided, their ancestors would've been too.
Guess what. People of all types different from the norm have suffered, been silenced, and disappeared all through your relatively privileged life and the lives of your ancestors. They've always been there, but they haven't been given a voice or fair access to human rights.
You don't get to ignore, disrespect, bitch about, abuse, and erase them because they're fighting for what you've always had. You cannot expect them to stay down just because history has always told them to, to keep your own selfish comforts safe. They're not going to take your human rights away, they're going to share them.
Throughout history there have always been homosexuals, bisexuals, people born in the wrong body, people of colour, women, people of different beliefs, disabled people, non-normative cis men, etc. etc. History has ignored or erased much of their existence, their stories of a normal life of love and work, as well as of abuse, fear, death. Of course it has, it has been written by the people accepted as the norm over time. Only the rare cases of those in a prominent enough position to be noted, or recorded through arrest and trial documents, have survived.
We don't have to apologise or feel ashamed for being 'politically correct' because we want to include everyone in being treated like a fellow human being. We don't have to accept your belief that these people have just sprung up out of nowhere and should shut up about fighting to have the same rights that you've always had.
Your ignorance, phobias, hate, selfishness - that's all on you to change. It's not on them to be quiet and stop trying to be equal to protect your poor delicate delusions.
You say the world is going insane, that the people nowadays are way too thin-skinned. The only thin-skinned ones I see are the ones who are screaming "political correctness!" and "social justice warriors!" because they're afraid of sharing their privilege of basic and normal human rights They're afraid to acknowledge that they do have a relatively better life for no reason other than coincidence of birth. They're afraid of the idea that they have to work to change themselves and the culture around them to allow space for those who should've had it too, for all this time.
Again, anyone who thinks caring and giving equal basic rights to every minority - to those who have quietly suffered throughout history - is backwards? Is wrong? Is laughable?
You're backwards. You're wrong. You're laughable.
