Alex was not really sure how she got herself in this situation. Booking a flight back home after 8 years of living alone in a city where she does not know anyone. Packing her laptop securely in her tote bag and grabbing a stick of Marlboro, she proceeded to walk towards the exit and headed to the airport’s designated smoking area. She was not really nervous; she’s just agitated or maybe anxious. Her therapist had told her that- two days ago, right after she said she was going home. Because she does have an assumption about how the people back home are going to be, but mostly because she is scared, they are no longer the way they are. After all, 8 freaking years is long.
She scrolls through her phone once again, to check her sister’s shared location. She took one long drag of her cigarette one last time before throwing it in the bin, heads inside and lines along the boarding.
Back home;
Not much has changed, she can tell you that. She sees familiar faces. She can’t help but appreciate the newness of the place, but still feel familiar. The thing is, she is excited to explore the place, but she is never going to say that out loud. Alex is fine silently ogling the city she was born in.
She isn’t sure what made her do it, maybe it’s the feeling of sitting alone at the only pub in the town, right at the corner with dingy light, a two-man band playing Leader of The Band, or maybe it’s the half empty bottle of rum. But she does it anyways. She took a photo of the bottle, searches for the 3 people who mattered to her back in high school, adds them on a group chat then sends to them. She instantly sees the white bubble appear, and sees that these 3 has read her message. She pins her location, and sends it as well.
Nat: So, you are home?
Angie: ALEEEEEEEXXXX! Where are you now?
Shane: I know that place.
Alex smiles at the instantaneous responses. She starts typing back.
Alex: Come over then.
Angie: will be there in a minute, see you 😊
Nat: on my way 😉
Shane: wait, nat, aren’t you in (city)?
Nat: been home since the pandemic, lol.
Ange: We’ve got a lot of catching up to do!
It did not take long for the 3 of them to start arriving.
