So tomorrow I'm going to try and take the first steps in getting officially diagnosed with depression. My goal is to also go on medication for it. However, I have no clue what steps to take in order to do this. I don't have a doctor but I did find a mental health center near me. I have no clue how to approach this though. Like I don't know how any of this works. Like do I need to referral from a doctor to go to them, or can I just call? How do I phrase things? How do I bring up medication? I'm so scared and so incredibly nervous. If anyone has any advice or can share their experience with getting diagnosed and/or going on medication, I would really appreciate any information you can give me. :)

If I was you, I would just call them. Explain that you believe you have depression and would like to be officially diagnosed and be able to start medication, but you don't know what the process is for this to happen. They can talk you through it, tell you what you need to do (e.g. if you need a referral) and give you access to any resources you need. I've never been in your situation before, but that's probably the easiest way to get answers and start the journey (and, if they're a mental health centre, they're likely to be kind and helpful). Best of luck my friend! I'm proud of you for taking this step:)
ReplyI'm not sure how much you already know. But once you get the appointment setup. For your first visit you usually see a psychologist/therapist for an "introductory" type of visit to see what's going on and what the best course of action is. Sometimes when you check-in for visit or during the session they'll have you feel out paperwork w/ a whole bunch of multiple choice questions to help determine depression, anxiety, etc. You'll talk to the therapist about what you're experiencing and your situation. You can discuss that you feel like you have depression and are interested in getting on medication as part of treatment. The therapist will then schedule you for another visit to see them again & will help you with setting-up an appointment to see a psychiatrist/doctor who prescribes the medication. That visit is usually brief and is more focused on getting you on the right medicine. Hopes to helps.
ReplyI hope you can ditch the lackie who claims you as their friend, chasing away the people who might actually have info. you could use.
ReplyIf this was directed at me (first commenter), then I have no idea what you're trying to say, but your comment is entirely unhelpful
