as i walked with earnest
down the damp sidewalk,
braving the slippery ice and
melting slush which
soaked through my converse,
the almost-spring breeze
caressed my face,
making my dangly butterfly earrings
jingle like tiny bells around my head.
a flash of a memory
surfaces in my mind,
of smooth glossy pages
and a hard white cover
of a book i read cover to cover
over and over
as a child, obsessed with the legends
and tales of faeries
who’s voices sound like
the tinkling of tiny bells
that the pages detailed.
i remember once reading
that if you clap you hands,
it shows the faeries you believe in them
and it’ll save them from dying out.
as i continued towards my car,
something happens unconsciously
and i just barely
separate my clasped hands
snuggled against the warmth of my abdomen
hibernating in my sweatshirt pocket
and tap my hands together
three faint times.
hello, faeries.
