Every time I meet new people, I feel anxious and awkward. I hate making new friends and having conversations with people. I'm going into my sophomore year of college, and I'm staying on campus, which means that I will have a suite mate. I'm especially anxious about meeting her in person. I just started a new job and one of my coworkers is very annoying. He tries to talk to me outside of work hours and constantly talks about his upcoming birthday. I also know that he has a crush on me, and that makes things ten times worse. I have anxiety while talking to people, but I also hate talking to people because they expect me to emulate them in some way, but I'm confident in who I am. I don't have social media because I want to be closed off from everyone, but it's inescapable. My boyfriend is also a very social person and wants me to be more social, but I just don't want to. I like being with only him, and I like being by myself. I enjoy one-on-one time with people who understand me and don't try to change me, but it seems like people always try to do just that.

Anxiety is a label for a story we have adopted about bodily sensations (increased heart rate and body temperature, headache, sweaty palms, etc.,) that come and go. The story adds energy to these sensations giving them the power to persist, intensify, and return often.
The next time these sensations arrive, accept them, allow them to stay, don't name them or have a mental commentary about them. They will leave soon enough without much notice and will return less often because you will give them no energy. Just give this a try if you want to feel better.
