Is it wrong for me to have my own beliefs that don't align with the norm?

I grew up with a Christian upbringing. Over time, I recognized that my views and beliefs didn't align with them. Over the years, I've fought my family for my beliefs as I declared myself an atheist. For many of those years, I took the time to recognize that it's not bad for people to have their own beliefs and that I should respect that. Recently, I realized that my views do align with a different religion (mostly tradition-wise) and took the opportunity to tell my mother.
Her response was "Do you honestly believe that...?". It irritated me. My response was "Do you honestly believe there's a random bearded man in the sky that created everything by himself?" then proceeded with "See how awful that question makes you feel? That's what you just said to me." She finally dropped the subject and we continued with a peaceful chat but it has just made me feel awful. I trusted her with that detail just for her to betray that trust once again, just adding to the pile. I don't think I'm going to disclose personal information to her ever again, at least until she earns that trust back. She lost that privilege.
My father is an atheist so I'll probably never tell him. He has also lost my trust in many areas. I get the feeling he would just call my beliefs stupid.
Is it so hard to just accept that people sometimes believe in different things? I support them in their decisions and choices. Why can't they do the same back? My entire life has just been disappointment after disappointment with many members of my family and friends.
It sucks.
I hope everyone on here is having a better day than I am.
Warm Regards.

Just because you believe in something doesn't make it true.
ReplyYou're not wrong, but I think the point they're trying to get at is that they just want to be respected.
